Safely relocated to Mai Po wetlands

The Lantau Buffalo Association, in a joint effort with the WWF HK, have relocated a water buffalo to Mai Po Nature Reserve for research purposes. The LBA’s part is this operation was the selection, location, capture and transfer of the water buffalo from its herd in Pui O, Lantau Island.

In continuing co-operation with WWF the LBA will carry out research on the relocated buffalo. The LBA will compare the behaviour and welfare of the relocated buffalo with that of Lantau cattle and water buffalo which are under threat by environmental pollution, fly-tipping, road traffic and Animal-Human conflict involving land tenure.

It is hoped that the relocation and study will increase our knowledge of how water buffalo interact with their eco-environment enabling evidence-based management decisions to be made regarding wetland habitats and the appropriate care of water buffalo. It is hoped that these principals can then be applied to the conservation of other wetlands in Hong Kong or further a field.
